Helping out Officer Chrome Face

These are workable looping GIFs that are portions of what I hope will be a more complete GIF. This poor Chrome-face robot officer from THX1138 is having problems dancing with the wall.

Due to a slight adjustment of the camera angle during filming, Chrome-face’s feet aren’t fully visible at the beginning of the shot, but they are visible at the end. Looping the full set of frames emphasizes the camera shift at the jump. Gonna see if good old photoshop can help fix that without any messy visual artifacts. That’s the goal for the final GIF.

Here’s the challenge — the variation in the camera tilt between the start and the end of the sequence.

More to come.

Next step -- a frame freed of Officer Chrome-Face (composited to provide constant and unchanging high and low borders from the frames shared in the preceding GIF.

This image will be used as a mask to provide a constant frame of reference, with vertical adjustments within the mask to minimize the perception that the image tilt exists. I’m concerned about introducing non-existing movements of the background in fiddling with the frame alignment — but I’m going to try… Worst case scenario, I’ll post the full sequence as-is with the visible tilt/jump in place. But first, I’m hoping to be able to resolve it.

Again, more to follow.

Invoking Enthusiastic Participation

I’m suddenly tempted to go deep, and speak of motivation, engagement, self-directed learning, motion and agency, purpose, creativity and community, but I’ll just let those words float there and share this:

Find out more about The @scottlo Driveby Show, and how to listen and participate.

The #ds106radio @scottlo Driveby Show. He’s in a Yaris.

In what promises to be yet another wonderful ‘slice of life’ internet production, our friend-in-the-field, Scott Lo (@scottlo), has launched (at 6000 RPMs!) The Driveby Show.

‘Casting early in the morning from his considerately time-shifted home base of Saudi Arabia, after a bowl of his favourite Grape Nuts cereal, Scott begins his day with his friendly voice, sharing his thoughts over the ds106radio airwaves as he heads off to work in The Yaris*.

If you’ve not yet tuned in, you have only to dial in to experience the barrels of black gold that Scott is pumping out. Get the down-lo on the lo-down every day that he broadcasts, arriving here in the EDT at 10:30 pm. Note: We spring-ed forward here Sunday morning, so you folks need to refer to it with the D and not the S for then next nine months or so!

While the complete format new show is still evolving (we want an interview with the Urdu Tea-Master some day), Scott has indicated that he will accept listener contributions for inclusion in the DRIVEBY SHOW. There is now a Audio Assignment in support of this effort, “Audio Assignment 985: Scott Lo The Driveby Show Interactive Audio Contribution “. In an effort to support this new series on #ds106radio, Scott will find a short 3-minute audio clip later today in his email when he awakes. You’ll have to listen in to hear what he makes of it.

As always, when Invoking Enthusiastic Participation, please be sure to always Practice Safe Broadcasting!!

*A note regarding The Yaris.

Were it not for the fact that I’d had a rental car just last week (for the first time in years) I would not have had a clue what Scott was going on about when he prepended his characteristic “the” to the utterance Yaris. As it turned out, I had just driven in one (and my thanks go out to @timmmmyboy, @mbransons, @DrGarcia, @noiseprofessor for their company and the info about where to find the fuel door release switch!) and so I’ve had that context to frame my imagination when Scott mentions it. That, and a coincidental yet synchronistic re-watching that same weekend of Code 46, where Tim Robbins drives a solitary compact car on huge, abandoned desert highways.

Unfinished Business: Some Movies Could Make a Gazillion GIFs

So I have a whole whack of GIFs that I was working on for a movie back during GIFestivus2012. You know, enough GIFs for a nice Multi-Panel GIF Story Assignment

The thing is, I still have folders of image sequences for some more GIFs to go along with the ones that are done — I’ve not worked on that set in over a month — and to post only some would not do the story summary idea justice.

New Business: So Just Start on Another Movie!

But Wednesday night I took a look at another old favourite movie and started making GIFs from it. So now I’ve got a second multi-panel series underway. And I can see myself plugging away at that for some time to come.

The thing is, I’m not going to wait on these ones. I’m just going to post ’em as I do em. Rather than have them languish in the digital GIF equivalent of the old photo drawer in the living room book shelves, these are going to get shoved up onto the mantel for folks to look at as they walk by on the way to the TV. (That’s just a metaphor for posting them here on de•tri•tus.)

These aren’t in a specific order. I’m not going to ensmallen them into a table so you can look at them collectively. They don’t necessarily tell a story. YET. Even if you don’t know the film, I expect that you will likely enjoy these as they are, in a nice 600 pixel wide format, and for me, as GIFs, they create a little bit of art out of another bit of art.

And just so you know, I’m thinking I’ll do a ds106radio show one night with some chatter about this film. It’s one of my favourites from way back. And so, allow me to present some GIFs from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Across the 8th Dimension

and then, jumping way ahead in the narrative, we arrive at the aesthetically fascinating torture scene, where Dr. Emilio Lizardo (Evil Lord John Worfin, a red lectroid from Planet 10) tries to get Buckaroo to reveal he secrets of the Oscillation Overthurster by subjecting him to The Shock Tower.

… And that’s what I’ve got done at this point. I think I’ll head over to visit Dr. Emilio Lizardo in the sanitarium (before he escapes) next. John Lithgow has some wonderful over-the-top faces in this film. There must be at least three good GIFs in there, just need to find them.

Bring IT, Together! #1

The Educational Computing Organization of Ontario (ECOO) will be hosting its 2013 annual conference this year in Niagara Falls, Ontario, October 23rd-25th. It will be a blast!!

In working up a logo for the event, somehow an animated GIF crept into my visualization process. Can you imagine?

Somehow, my imagination has a series in the works. Perhaps another by the end of the day.
