{"id":9595,"date":"2013-01-26T00:01:54","date_gmt":"2013-01-26T05:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/aforgrave.ca\/detritus\/?p=9595"},"modified":"2013-01-26T22:05:46","modified_gmt":"2013-01-27T03:05:46","slug":"deleted-scene-from-recette-pas-necessaire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aforgrave.ca\/detritus\/2013\/01\/26\/deleted-scene-from-recette-pas-necessaire\/","title":{"rendered":"Deleted Scene from &#8220;Re\u00e7ette Pas N\u00e9cessaire&#8221; Later Shows Up in &#8220;The Shining&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 636px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/aforgrave\/8416128682\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8190\/8416128682_1df8a48bc8_z.jpg\" width=\"626\" height=\"462\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Deleted Scene from &#8220;Re\u00e7ette Pas N\u00e9cessaire&#8221; (print damaged during processing) by aforgrave, on Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A poorly developed film negative (see above) resulted in this scene being edited out of the final cut of the third film in Julia Child&#8217;s <strong>&#8220;Le Chef de la mort&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0action trilogy, <a title=\"Julia Child is &quot;The Cookist&quot; Action Poster, on de\u2022tri\u2022tis\" href=\"http:\/\/aforgrave.ca\/detritus\/2013\/01\/25\/julia-child-is-the-cookist\/\">&#8220;Re\u00e7ette Pas N\u00e9cessaire.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can get <em>some<\/em> sense of the original drama in this animated GIF assembled from the ONLY two frames that could be salvaged from the scene:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 636px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/aforgrave\/8416128682\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8190\/8416128682_162da4b6d6_o.gif\" width=\"626\" height=\"462\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Deleted Scene from &#8220;Re\u00e7ette Pas N\u00e9cessaire&#8221; (restored as animated GIF) by aforgrave, on Flickr<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As her fans know, Child was often heard exclaiming, &#8220;Why use just one knife, when a cleaver and a handful of knives can do such a better job?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is commonly agreed upon in Hollywood<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em> by people in the know<\/em><\/span> that due to the unfortunate mishandling of the original negatives for this scene in &#8220;Re\u00e7ette Pas N\u00e9cessaire,&#8221; when the effect was again attempted many later by the same cinematographer while working on <strong>The Shining<\/strong>, it was<em> the latter film<\/em> that benefited from the first exposure of the effect to theatre-going audiences.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/assignments.ds106.us\/assignments\/say-it-like-the-peanut-butter\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/assignments.ds106.us\/files\/2011\/12\/shining.gif\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A GIF from The Shining, commonly agreed to be derivative of the original (but damaged) scene from the much earlier Julia Child film &#8220;Re\u00e7ette Pas N\u00e9cessaire.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most agree that, despite the improved technology used in the later film (better lenses, larger film stock, and most notably, colour), the use of a <em>single<\/em> knife and the <em>absence of a corpse within the shot<\/em> diminishes the effect from that of the Child original. There is no doubt that the later entry is clearly derivative.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Oh, we saw The Shining once on VHS,&#8221; Child said many years later. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t bother us in the least. We had fun making our films, and after a career of sharing our expertise in both the cooking and film industries, we&#8217;re just happy to see that our work is being valued, re-heated, and re-served to sate the appetites of today&#8217;s young people.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>This is my first official (albeit contrived) entry for the <a title=\"ds106 Visual Assignment 2: Say It Like the Peanut Butter\" href=\"http:\/\/assignments.ds106.us\/assignments\/say-it-like-the-peanut-butter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Visual Assignment 2: Say It Like the Peanut Butter<\/a> assignment.
