Themes on a Song of Peace from Finlandia

The Daily Create, tdc1979 asks us to share a song with a message of peace. I’ve always had a real fondness for Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia Hymn. The challenge thus became to select something nice from Youtube to share.

As it turned out, there are a number of wonderful renderings available, and so, rather than choosing one, I have instead embedded a number videos below, with the hopes that you might enjoy the unique interpretation each one brings.

There are many different lyrics — the Song of Peace (This is my Song) lyrics by Lloyd Stone are the ones which I have enjoyed for many years.

A Song of Peace
music by Jean Sibelius (1900) ,
these lyrics by Lloyd Stone (1938)

This is my song, O God of all the nations
A song of peace, for lands afar and mine
This is my home, the country where my heart is
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine

My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine
But other lands have sunlight, too, and clover
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations
A song of peace for their land and for mine

Enjoy!

This performance includes a broader inclusion of additional movements from the full Finlandia, as well as the hymn. If you want to hear the full Finlandia (rather than just the hymn) search for the 10 minute long selections on Youtube.
